According to an announcement from Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon.com intends to invest S$12 billion ($8.88 billion) over the next four years to build its cloud computing infrastructure in Singapore.
The investment brings the company's overall anticipated expenditure to more than S$23 billion by 2028, according to a statement from AWS. This brings the total amount spent in the Asia Pacific Region to S$11.5 billion up until 2023.
The leading figures in Southeast Asia are vying for a larger stake in global tech.
Apple is one of the recent investors in the area; the company plans to invest more than $250 million in its Singaporean operations.
AWS also announced a partnership with public sector organisations, businesses, and the Singaporean government to speed up the country's adoption of generative AI and artificial intelligence (AI).
Amazon made this statement as part of its newest strategy to roll out AWS infrastructure throughout Southeast Asia during the AWS ASEAN Summit in Singapore. The business has earlier declared plans to invest $5 billion in Thailand and $6 billion in Malaysia.
Amazon's announcement follows Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's announcement, made during a tour to the area, of cloud services investments totaling $2.2 billion in Malaysia and $1.7 billion in Indonesia.
Southeast Asia boasts 670 million young, tech-savvy people, and technology giants are becoming more interested in the region.
In a report published by the official news agency on Monday, Malaysia's commerce minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz stated that Google will be making an announcement "in the near future" on its plans to invest in the nation.
