CNN from Warner Bros. Discovery to introduce its first subscription service

The Wall Street Journal has obtained an exclusive story stating that CNN, a division of Warner Bros. Discovery, would be eliminating around 100 positions and introducing its inaugural CNN.com subscription service later this year.

There are rumours that CNN wants to become less reliant on its cable TV channel. According to the Wall Street Journal, which cited a message delivered to staff members on Wednesday, CNN CEO Mark Thompson said that the corporation will be consolidating its digital and television newsgathering divisions into a single organisation in order to concentrate on its digital growth.

The nearly 3,500-person corporation is rumoured to have announced layoffs across the board, according to the CEO.

CNN is apparently looking to develop a digital company worth over $1 billion, while the Wall Street Journal stated that Thompson would not comment on the terms of the subscription offering. Thompson responded, "It's a logical possibility," when asked if it would be comparable to the Times' packaged offer.

As the company's traditional cable business has been losing ground, Thompson has focused on enhancing CNN's online content.
