In order to replace Rishi Sunak, the Conservatives will hold a three-month leadership competition that will conclude on November 2 with the introduction of the new leader.
Although Rishi Sunak has legally resigned as party leader, he will continue in that role until a replacement is chosen.
Although no one has formally declared their intention to run, Mel Stride, a former minister, has expressed interest in running and stated that he was "considering" doing so.
The others are the shadow home secretary James Cleverly, the shadow security minister Tom Tugendhat, the shadow communities secretary Kemi Badenoch, the former immigration minister Robert Jenrick, and the former home secretaries Suella Braverman and Dame Priti Patel.
On Wednesday, nominations will open. To advance to the first round of voting, candidates must receive the support of ten Members of Parliament. Four candidates will be selected by MPs and given the opportunity to address party members at the Conservative conference in September.
After that, MPs will narrow the field to two contenders, and party members will cast an online vote to determine the ultimate victor.
Up to 11 of the 121 Tory MPs who are still in office will have one week to submit their nominations for the first round, which ends on July 29.
Beginning next week, candidates will also have the opportunity to launch their campaigns over the summer break.
When parliament reconvenes in early September, MPs will then start to reduce the field through a series of ballots, bringing the total down to four by the end of that month at the Tory conference.
The party members' poll will end on October 31.
Voting will only be available to party members who have been active members at the time of the nominations for candidates opening and have been members for 90 days or longer when the ballot closes, according to the party.
