Eight days of strikes are planned for this month at London's Gatwick airport.

The Unite trade Union said on Wednesday that some 230 employees at London Gatwick, the second busiest airport in Britain, will go on strike for eight days this month over salary issues, threatening flight disruptions during the busiest travel season of the year.

In separate salary disputes, ground handlers, passenger assistants, and other airport employees at Gatwick have been in negotiations with a number of companies, including Red Handling, Wilson James, Menzies, and ASC.

After receiving better compensation offers, several planned strikes were put on hold last month. However, Unite said on Wednesday that Red Handling and Wilson James employees will engage in strike action.

Over 200 flights will be cancelled or delayed over the first four days of the most recent strikes, which will occur in various phases from August 18 to August 28 and conclude on a British national holiday.

Red Handling and Wilson James need to "wake up and smell the coffee," Unite national secretary Sharon Graham said. "Other employers at the airport are prepared to pay the going rate and there is no excuse why they should not do the same."

"There is no way that our members will accept a real terms pay cut and poverty pay."

Since last year, hundreds of thousands of employees in Britain have gone on strike because their wage raises are not keeping up with the rising rate of inflation.
