Following Turkey's withdrawal of its bid, the UK and Ireland will host Euro 2028.

Following the announcement that a joint bid to host the men's European Championship in 2028 will move through without opposition, football will come to the home nations and the Republic of Ireland.

On Wednesday morning, UEFA announced that Turkey, who had previously shown interest in hosting the competition, had withdrawn its application, giving the UK and Ireland proposal a clear advantage.

Since the English Football Association said it will not seek to host the men's Fifa World Cup in 2030, the UK and Ireland have been the favourites for 2028. In order to make up for the lost money from the 2021 tournament that Covid disrupted, UEFA wants a developed football market to host the 2028 competition.

Turkey had complicated matters by indicating interest in both 2028 and 2032, but it has decided to focus on a joint effort with Italy to host the 2032 edition.

UEFA has received ten venue proposals from the five host countries for the 24-team Euro 2028 competition. Six of these locations will be in England, including Villa Park, St. James' Park, and Everton's unfinished Bramley Moore Dock stadium. The list is completed by Casement Park in Belfast, Dublin's Aviva Stadium, Glasgow's Hampden Park, and Cardiff's Principality Stadium.

UEFA prefers that the qualifying procedure for the tournament be followed by England, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, with two host nation spots remaining open for any countries who don't make it. The top two performers would advance if more than two failed to qualify.

Debbie Hewitt, the head of the FA, praised the advantages of hosting the competition for the domestic game and referred to the bid as "pioneering" in April.

The Italian and Turkish FAs expressed a desire to submit a joint bid to host UEFA Euro 2032 in an announcement on July 28. UEFA confirmed the news in a statement, saying: "Further to this announcement, the UEFA administration has today written to both associations to confirm that their joint bid has been duly received and will be forwarded for assessment and consideration by the UEFA executive committee.
