Starmer claims that Labour will not open the spending taps

If his party wins the next general election, Sir Keir Starmer is expected to issue a warning that the UK will be subject to "huge constraints" on public spending.

Anyone hoping for a Labour government to "quickly turn on the spending taps is going to be disappointed," he will preach on Monday, according to the BBC news.

The next election will see both Labour and the Conservatives competing on the issue of growing the economy.

Labour's borrowing plan would increase taxes, according to the Conservatives.

Due to pressure on household budgets from inflation and high-interest rates, the cost of living in the UK has pushed the economy to the forefront of political discourse.

However, Andrew Bailey, the governor of the Bank of England, stated last week that the UK's productivity rates create some concern.

Sir Keir will declare later on Monday that "if we are to turn around the economy, economic growth will have to become Labour's obsession" in a speech to economists and think tanks.

However, he will contend that choices made by the current government and earlier Conservative governments during the previous 13 years "will constrain what a future Labour government can do".

Along with emphasising growth, Sir Keir will lay out his plans, which include drafting a "proper industrial strategy drawn up with business" and altering "restrictive planning laws and get Britain building again".

He will also state that Labour will negotiate "a new deal to make work pay with increased mental health support, fully-funded plan to cut NHS waiting lists, an end to zero hour contracts, no more fire and rehire, and a real living wage".
