Suella Braverman has been appointed by new PM Rishi Sunak as Home Secretary just six days after leaving former PM Liz Truss’ Cabinet. She sent her letter of resignation to Liz Truss for breaching the ministerial code of conduct.
She resumes the post she had under Truss who resigned last week. Braverman represents the pro-Brexit right of the party, and many speculate that Sunak has reappointed her to appease Tory MPs who share Braverman’s stance and promote party unity.
Other appointments include:
- Michael Gove as Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, Minister for Intergovernmental Relations. He was sacked last July by former PM Boris Johnson
- Penny Mordaunt, Sunak’s leadership contest opponent, has kept her role as Lord President of the Council, and Leader of the House of Commons
- Grant Shapps, who supported Sunak’s leadership bid against Truss, has been appointed Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy
- Gillian Keegan has been appointed Secretary of State for Education
- Steve Barclay has been appointed as Health Secretary
- Therese Coffey stays on as Environment Secretary
- Michelle Donelan has been re-appointed as Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport
- Mel Stride has been appointed as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions
