Which? conducted a poll of consumers' preferred supermarkets, and Marks & Spencer topped the results for the third year in a row.
Own label selections, customer service for fresh items, and shop design all received great marks, helping it to maintain its top spot despite competition from less expensive brands.
Aldi came in second and spearheaded the push from the low-cost supermarket chains; its selection was frequently attributed to its value for money.
John Lewis's arm Third place went to Waitrose, whose high-quality offerings were seen to justify their high price.
The two chains that were recently acquired through highly leveraged or debt-financed transactions, Asda and Morrisons, received the lowest ratings for the in-store experience.
Which? gave the duo a value-for-money rating of two stars.
According to the consumer organisation, Iceland emerged victorious in the online competition, while Aldi struggled to match its in-store appeal and received poor scores in every online category.
